Editorial perspective
Recognize the Experience You Already Have
Nicole Darden Ford planned to leave the military and go to college. Recruiters were presenting another possibility: the technical work she was already doing could be valuable in a civilian role.
In her Fireside Chat conversation, she recalled trying to understand that connection. She could describe her daily responsibilities, but it was less obvious to her how they translated into the jobs people were discussing.
Her account included supporting important government technology while still very young, learning from more experienced people and asking questions about the work. She later accepted a role supporting a Navy program office and continued her education at night.
Daily work can become invisible to its owner
The story captures a familiar transition problem. A person can be accustomed to a responsibility without having a clear way to explain its value in a different setting. The work feels ordinary because it is part of everyday life, even when it has required significant learning and judgment.
An editorial application for cyber professionals is to describe experience through responsibilities and actions. What systems did you support? What decisions did you make? What did you learn to handle reliably? Those questions can make the connection to a new role easier to examine.
They also keep the discussion grounded. Recognizing transferable experience is different from assuming that every qualification or context carries over unchanged. A new environment still brings new things to learn.
Darden Ford's account shows both sides: experience opened an unexpected door, and education continued alongside the next role. Understanding what she already brought did not require treating her development as finished.
