Ask what changes after the technology arrives

Published October 10, 2026 · Tm

In his Fireside Chat, Yuval Bustan described pursuing international relations alongside a career in technology. Discussing his doctoral research, he raised questions about introducing technology, judging whether it fits a need, handling unintended consequences and managing expectations.

Look beyond the installation

Those questions are useful prompts for an organizational project. A successful installation does not by itself explain whether people can use a system effectively or whether it has created a problem elsewhere. The discussion encourages attention to the surrounding decisions and assumptions.

Use a short decision note

Our takeaway is to write down four things before a rollout: the problem being addressed, the reason the proposed change fits, the side effects worth watching and the expectations people should have. Revisit the note after implementation. Where did experience confirm the assumptions, and where did it challenge them?

Make room for another perspective

Bustan’s account also illustrates the value of an interest outside a professional specialty. A different discipline can offer questions that familiar routines leave unasked.
