A Small Service Can Open a Larger View of the Operation

Published October 19, 2026 · Tm

Billy Langenstein traced the beginning of his sports and entertainment career to a simple assignment: make sure event staff had water.

In his Fireside Chat conversation, he recalled taking on that summer work as a teenager. Moving around the venue brought him into contact with people in security, guest services, food and beverage, production and operations. He would stop and talk with the people he was helping.

Conceptual live conversation with an anonymous guest, two moderators and audience questions; not a particular person or venue.

Over time, he learned other positions and took on additional responsibilities. The small service had given him a way to encounter the wider operation and understand the people within it.

Learn from the people carrying out the work

Langenstein's story makes attention to frontline work tangible. He was not learning about the venue only through its formal structure. He was meeting the people whose tasks made the event possible.

For cyber professionals, an editorial parallel is to spend time understanding the work that security supports. A conversation with someone operating a service can reveal constraints and dependencies that a diagram leaves out. It can also make later collaboration more personal and specific.

That does not mean a small helpful act is a career strategy with a guaranteed payoff. Langenstein described a progression of work, learning and responsibility over time. The original assignment mattered because of how he engaged with it and the people it introduced him to.

The enduring idea is to treat a narrow responsibility as a possible window into a larger system. Doing the task well and staying curious about the people around it can expand what a person understands before their formal scope expands.
